Man Arrested in Fatal Hit-and-Run

Construction worker was killed in October.

A Northport man was arrested Saturday and charged in the hit and run accident that killed a Massapequa Park construction worker.

Suffolk County police arrested John Pappias and charged him with leaving the scene of a fatal motor vehicle crash. On Oct.28, Victor Schultz and a coworker were on Route 25A in Fort Salonga loading a milling machine onto a trailer on the side of the roadway when Schultz was struck by a vehicle at 1:35 a.m. They were working the overnight shift for Intercounty Paving in Hicksville.

Schultz, 49, was pronounced dead at the scene by the Office of the Suffolk County Medical Examiner. The coworker was uninjured.

Pappias, 46, of 34 Lisa Drive, is scheduled to be arraigned at First District Court in Central Islip  on Sunday.

John is a good guy, a very hard worker and a dedicated father. I've known him since he was a kid. I'm shocked and disappointed he didn't stop. I wouldn't have thought it was in his character, but in a moment of panic he made a very wrong and irresponsible decision. No excuse what he did and he'll have to accept the full responsibility. What a terrible situation he's pushed upon himself and his family. My sympathies to the victim, Victor Schultz and his family. They deserved better.

Innocent until proven guilty. Lets not speculate as to what crimes are involved, especially those not charged. Thank you.

Pam, What precipitated your comment? I'm not reading anyone speculating anything. We are allowed to state opinions, no?

Might it be a better to have a statement to that effect similar to what Newsday does when it removes/censors a post? It would be a lot more clear to the readers than the invisible censoring now being used.

Am I allowed to post my opinion like everyone else is, or are you going to keep deleting my comments, as long as they are not in alignment with your opinion on this matter? The fact that my last comment was deleted really shows how bias this sites administrator/moderator really is. Why have a comment section open to the public, if the public can't post comments?

John, as long as your opinion is in line with what Patch deems "appropriate", you'll have to keep it to yourself. Just "big brother" in another form being pushed on us.
