Massapequa School District Kicks Off HIV/AIDS Awareness Week

Annual event leads up to World AIDS Day.

The Massapequa School District is once again remembering those who've lost their lives due to HIV and AIDS, while educating students about the health crisis.

The annual event coincides with World AIDS Day on Friday. 

Students from all grades will be receiving HIV lessons during the week, and it will culminate with a public viewing of the AIDS Memorial quilt on Thursday.

The Names Project, the custodian of the quilt will provide three panels  of the quilt to the district, which will be on display from 7:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at Massapequa High School's Baldwin Auditorium.

The full quilt is made up of more than 48,000 panels and commemorates 94,000 individuals, according to the district.

There will also be assemblies throughout the  week at the high school and teachers and students will be given red ribbons to show their support for those affected by HIV and AIDS.
