Sanitation Truck Fire on West End Avenue

TOBAY natural gas truck gutted in Friday morning blaze in Massapequa.

A Town of Oyster Bay sanitation truck was gutted by fire near the intersection of West End Avenue and Clinton Place.

The blaze broke out about 7 a.m. and about 25 firefighters responded to the scene, according to Massapequa Fire Chief Stephen Daresta.

The truck had three crew members aboard, all of whom got out safely. Residents of homes nearby self evacuated, Daresta said.

The fire presented a challenge according to Daresta, who said the truck was powered by two natural gas lines.

The chief said the crew members saw the flames shoot out behind the cabin, but the cause of the fire has not been determined, and it's not clear where the fire started.

The Town of Oyster Bay has to natural gas in an effort to reduce petroleum. 

Supervisor John Venditto issued a statement saying the Town will "conduct a thorough investigation" of this incident.
