School District Custodians Reach Agreement

Pact would end three years without contract for union.

The Massapequa School District has come to a new labor agreement with custodian's union, school officials have announced.

The custodians have been working without a contract for three years and the contract is retroactive to 2007, according to Massapequa School Superintendent Charles Sulc who announced the memorandum of agreement on Thursday.

The new contract would give the custodians a three percent raise the first year and two percent raises over the next three years, with the agreement expiring in 2011.

Included in the memorandum of agreement is a clause that would allow the district to conduct blood and urine testing for drugs.

Sulc said the district fought hard for the clause, which he said is only the second of its kind in Nassau County.

"We think it's absolutley critical to protect our kids," he said. "It was tough to get, but we got it."

Calls and emails to the custodian's union were not immediately returned.
