Weigh in on May Movies

We're approaching the start of Summer movie season. What's your must see flick?

For  many years, Memorial Day was the start of the summer blockbuster season for movie buffs. But recently, it seems that big movie openings are happening earlier in the month. This year, it appears the big budget "Popcorn" movies will begin the first week of May. It starts Friday with the Marvel superhero movie "The Avengers." A week later, Tim Burton will give his take on the classic soap opera, "Dark Shadows," starring Johnny Depp. We'll also see a film version of the popular board game "Battleship," and "Borat" star Sacha Baron Cohen's new movie "The Dictator." And yes, there will be a Memorial Day blockbuster, "Men in Black III" with Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones. We want to know which of these flicks you're looking forward to? Take …

Town Sponsors Walking Program At Parks

TOBAY NOTEBOOK: Season's final 'Distinguished Artists" program is a one-woman show.

Oyster Bay residents can join a co-ed walking program at two town parks beginning May first that can provide both exercise and a way to meet new people. Councilwoman Rebecca M. Alesia said walking is "an ideal form of activity for men and women of all fitness levels,"  and "best of all, you can learn great tips on exercise while getting a workout for free.” The town’s Spring Co-Ed Walking Program begins Monday, May 1, and continues through Thursday, June 7. The program will be held at both Syosset-Woodbury Community Park and John J. Three free concerts upcoming at local libraries.

Three free performances of the "Distinguished Artists" series are on tap for April at area public libraries. Oyster Bay town officials announced the schedule last week. The programs include a New Orleans Jazz Band, an afternoon of chamber music and an afternoon of “big band” swing and jazz music. April 21; 8 p.m.: Plainview Library: The Bob Cantwell New Orleans Jazz Band, featuring some of the jazz greats from the swing era. Massapequa Says Hello To Dolly

High School set to debut popular musical extravaganza this weekend in a lavish performance.

The halls of Massapequa High School reverberated with the delightful sounds of song and dance on Thursday as the music department held a full dress rehearsal of the comedic musical extravaganza," Hello Dolly." However, the cast certainly didn’t play to an empty theater- according to stage manager Jenna Fratello, the high school welcomes some very special guests to enjoy their pre-opening practice run. “Today’s performance is something we do every year- out annual senior citizen performance,” she said Thursday. “It’s open to any Senior citizen in the community...they can come for free, and there’s refreshments outside.” Hello Dolly officially opens at the high school on Friday,  with a second showing  on Saturday.  Both performances will be…

Weigh in on The Hunger Games

The new movie has generated a lot of buzz, will you check it out?

The new film, "The Hunger Games," has opened amidst a sea of publicity and predictions of major box office numbers.   The movie is based an a novel by Suzanne Collins and stars Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, Woody Harrelson, Elizabeth Banks and Lenny Kravitz. It is a story set in a post-apocalyptic society where teens are forced to fight to the death. It opened on Friday and it has received mostly positive reviews. Top Cellist Visits Unqua

Dr. James McWhorter's visit designed to honor musicians.

He's played in the White House and now he's played Unqua Elementary School–Dr. James McWhorter only plays the  big venues. McWhorter, a master cellist and educator, who once played in the United State's Marine Corp's "White House orchestra, visited the school to rehearse and give encouragement to fourth, fifth and sixth graders. “This was an extremely unique opportunity, especially for students on the elementary grade levels,” said Unqua orchestra teacher Alison Pearl. “Dr. McWhorter conducted a ‘professional’ rehearsal, demonstrated to students how to accomplish different sounds and offered constructive criticism to each section of the orchestra.”  McWhorter has had a long history of conducting youth orchestras, and has spent many summers…

25 Bands Perform Against Bullying

Long Island groups to raise money March 31 for L.I. Crisis Center, including show at the Blue Parrot.

Research show that more than 50 percent of young kids and teenagers have been bullied, often without telling their parents. That is just one reason why 25 local bands will perform at five Long Island venues, including one in Bethpage and another in Massapequa, on Saturday March 31 beginning at 8 p.m. to create awareness for the cause. The fundraiser will help the Long Island Crisis Center, a non-for-profit agency, with their efforts to consult people with such experiences. Act1 Entertainment and almost 250 volunteers are working together to create the “Banding Together Against Bullying” event. “The topic needs to be addressed. Apple unveiled their new tablet this week. Will you be a buyer?

It was the type of roll-ot that former Apple CEO Steve Jobs excelled at. But five months after the death of the company founder, new CEO Tim Cook was front and center as Apple unveiled the newest version of it's iPad this week. The new iPad has a sharper display screen and 4G capability among other features.  It looks similar to the iPad 2 but is slightly bigger. Funeral Set for Slain Foreign Journalist

The body of Long Island's Marie Colvin will be laid to rest following a funeral Mass Monday in Oyster Bay.

A funeral Mass for Marie Colvin, the international journalist from Long Island who was killed while on assignment in war-torn Syria Feb. 22, will be held Monday in Oyster Bay. Colvin's body will be laid to rest following a Mass at St. Dominic Roman Catholic Church on Monday at 11 a.m. Colvin grew up in East Norwich and attended Oyster Bay High School, graduating in 1974. Family members still live in the area. Colvin, 56, was on assignment for the Sunday Times of London in Homs, Syria, when she was killed in a rocket attack, according to the Mail Online of the United Kingdom. Syrian government forces loyal to their dictator, President Bashar al-Assad, had besieged the city in an ongoing civil war that has ravaged the region. She died …

Weigh in on Academy Awards

Sunday is Hollywood's big night. What movie did you love?

If you're a movie buff, then Sunday may be one of your favorite days of the year. It's Academy Awards night, and in addition to a lot of glamour, there will be an interesting race for Best Picture this year. There are films directed by legendary directors such as Woody Allen, Martin Scorsese, Steven Spielberg and Terrence Malick. The best picture category also has films with stars such as Tom Hanks, Sandra Bullock, George Clooney and Brad Pitt. But the unlikely favorite appears to be director Michel Hazanavicius' silent film "The Artist."  If it comes away with the trophy, "The Artist" will be the first silent film to win Best Picture since "Wings," which won the inaugural award in 1929.
