The Eternal Question

It is the eternal question.

Does the end justify the means?

I don't know, but I wonder.

This past month I attended a religious ceremony that was interrupted with a televised presentation.  This was a first in my memory.

While I don't dispute the good intention of the use of technology, nor the amount of information dispensed, I am uneasy.

Because, I must admit, I found it disruptive to my hour of worship. Admittedly, I am possessive about that hour of meditation probably more so because of the four years I abstained during my husband's illness.

Now each Sunday I say a quiet prayer of thanksgiving for having the privilege of attending this service once again.  So my viewpoint does not necessarily reflect those of the majority of worshippers.

And I am one of the first to not only recognize the advance of technology in today's world, but also admit my own particular addiction.  It is an area where I have to be cautious and not allow it to enter the realm of obsession.  So obviously, I am not unsympathetic to its use.

However, on Sunday it seemed to present an intrusion into the mystery and significance of the service.  Possibly, if the televised message had been given either before or after the service, I would not have felt so uncomfortable.

Undeniably, it was done exceedingly well, and quite professionally. The message was succinct and provided information about an incredibly good cause.  Did I learn anything from the presentation?  Yes, I did especially in an area quite close to my heart.  So obviously, it was successful.

Did the good achieved override the interruption of the traditional hour of prayer?

Is the dividing line between the centuries old ritual and new communication blurred or am I mired in yesterday?

Is it possible to respect the motive, but be negative about the intrusion into tradition and sanctity?

Am I alone in my reaction?  Or perhaps, it is an overreaction.

I wonder, and I go back to the eternal question that has plagued humanity for generations.

Do the ends justify the means?  I will always wonder, and I will not be alone.
