American Water Urges Customers to Follow Guidelines on Watering Lawns

Official says heat wave is putting "strain" on groundwater wells.

With the heat in the area causing temperatures to rise, New York American Water is asking customers to follow Nassau County Guidelines to conserve water.

While the company says they have enough water to serve customer needs,  Brian Bruce, NYAW Vice President of Operations says they're concerned about growing use over the last few days.

"The intense upsurge in demand that we have been experiencing in the current heat wave is putting a strain on our groundwater wells, resulting in some areas seeing reduced water pressure,” he said .

New York American Water, which serves parts of Massapequa and other parts of Long Island is reminding customers of Nassau County guidelines which state that homeowners with even numbered street addresses may sprinkle their lawns on even numbered calendar days between midnight to 10:00 a.m. and from 4:00 p.m. to midnight.

Home addresses without street numbers must follow guidelines for even calendar days.  Houses with odd numbers addresses may sprinkle on odd numbered calendar days between midnight to 10:00 a.m. and from 4:00 p.m. to midnight.

Nobody should water their lawns from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

A spokesman for the Massapequa Water District said that they have plenty of water and are not asking residents to take any special steps to conserve at this time.
