A Massapequa Navy SEAL who lost his life in a training exercise is the inspiration behind a charity softball tournament at Burns Park next weekend.
Jonathan Kaloust was an All-Nassau wrestler at Massapequa High School and continued his career in college at Binghamton.
His wrestling brethren have not forgotten. Nassau and Suffolk wrestling coaches and officials associations will face off in a softball tournament Aug. 25. The event runs from 9:45 a.m.-2:30 p.m. and proceeds will be donated to the Kaloust family.
“We wanted to do a summer event with Suffolk officials and then it grew,” said event organizer Ken Ahrem, a Suffolk wrestling official whose own son is a SEAL. “We wanted to honor Jonathan and his family.”
Kaloust was killed in May when his vehicle overturned during a training exercise in Fort Knox, Ky. He was 23.
The family, Ahrem said, will donate the funds to a cause of their choice in their son’s name.
