Where to meet other Moms and find kid's groups.

What Massapequa Moms are asking about . . . Where to meet other Moms and where to find kid groups?

Many Moms, especially new and stay-at-home Moms go through periods of isolation. It’s healthy to balance the intensive demands of motherhood with some “grown-up” time, and connecting with other Moms is often a great way to do it. Fortunately, there are places to go – and people to see – that can help Moms get out of the house and into a more social setting. There are options out there that facilitate spending time with other Moms as well as other Moms and kids.

As close as the local library, there are several Mommy & Me programs where new friends can be made. The Massapequa library Children’s Program offerings are extensive and span Story Times for infants, toddlers, and young children with adults (so Moms and kids can both connect), as well as afterschool activities and Family Fun Nights that welcome parents and children. The next Mommy & Me session will run on Wednesdays from 10:15 – 11:15 a.m. at May 4th through 25th. A complete list of offerings and registration forms can be found at:  http://www.nassaulibrary.org/massapq/

A fabulous resource for local Moms to connect is just a few miles away at the (MMC), located at 610 Carmans Road in Farmingdale. The non-profit community program “was formed to promote the positive aspects of parenthood and families by offering playgroups, parent education and support, mom & child activities, and family functions.” MMC facilitates “a forum for mothers to meet and talk, to gain friendships and knowledge and most of all find a place to feel comfortable in.”

MMC’s programs and services are very comprehensive and include: Mommy & Child Classes; Discussion Groups with childcare; Baby & Me (6 - 18 mos.) with sibling childcare; Mommy & Me (18 mos. - 2+ yrs.); Separation (2.5 + yrs.); Music & Me (12 mos. - 3+ yrs.); Weekend Trips; Girl's Night Outings; Book Club; Craft Club; Healthy Moms Club; Special Needs Support Club; Weight Loss Support Club; Bowling League; Yoga Classes; Summer Fun Program; Daddy and Me T-Ball; and, Outreach Projects.

Our local MMC is affiliated with the National Association of Mothers' Centers and is run by parent members. Membership is varied and spans Moms with children from infancy through teens and even adulthood. The Center also facilitates support for mothers going through the trials of post-partum depression. (More info is available on this at www.postpartumny.org)

MMC membership typically runs September through August but the year is broken into cycles.

There’s still time to sign up for the spring cycle which begins in April and runs though June. Membership is $25 for the remainder of the cycle through August, if you join at this time, and the Summer cycle includes a lot of family, child and Mom-only events, as well as Daddy & Me T-ball.

Membership comes complete with a monthly newsletter that is both emailed and snail-mailed, and includes info on discussion groups, several clubs (book club, healthy moms club, craft club) and activities throughout the year.

Non-members are also welcome to take part in the center's offerings which include most Mommy & Me programs, clubs, classes, seminars, workshops and all social events. (The fee may be slightly higher for non-members and priority is given to members when there is limited space availability.)

And, to help stay in shape and ward off some stress, MMC also offers Yoga and Zumba classes and provides childcare.

The center invites  people to stop in during regular business hours (which are Monday - Friday, 9:45 a.m.-12:00 p.m.)  You can look at childcare rooms and you can also call them to take a trial class.
