A look back at Massapequa's biggest news stories.

It was an extraordinary year in Massapequa, but not always for the right reasons. In 2012, we saw a major storm, the loss of some important area leaders and and a couple of scandals. 

Here's a look back:

Sandy: It would be impossible to look back on 2012 without starting with the terrible storm that destroyed homes, left thousands without power and will certainly affect us in many ways going into 2013.

Peter Schmitt: Massapequa lost a political giant when longtime Nassau County Legislator Peter Schmitt died.

Harry Jacobson: The Village of Massapequa Park also lost an important figure when Trustee Harry Jacobson died.

Missing Swimmer: Raymond Roth of Massapequa was at the center of the strangest story of 2012. He was arrested for allegedly plotting to fake his own death.

Rusty Torres: The sex abuse arrest of a former Yankee from Massapequa who became a youth baseball coach shocked the area.

Officer Indicted: Another strange story from 2012 was the arrest of 7th Precinct accused of spending time with a Massapequa girlfriend when he was supposed to be on duty.

New School Board Member: Massapequa saw a new face on their school board with the May election of Joe La Bella.

New Board President: Maryanne Fisher was named the new president of the Board of Education.

Heroin  Sweep: A Massapequa woman was accused of of selling heroin out of a restaurant parking lot.

Unqua Hit and Run: A mother was killed in a hit and run crash near Unqua Elementary School in March.
