Two mother Facebook groups from Massapequa and Wantagh are joining forces to try and help protect children against bullying.
The Wantagh Mommas and Massapequa Moms Facebook groups are working to spread awareness about bullying issues children are facing in local schools and are forming educational programs to combat the problem. Rosemarie Ferrara DeMaio of Wantagh has been spearheading the effort and last week started a Facebook group called the South Shore Community Bullying Project.
"As parents we need to come together to solve this problem," said DeMaio, who has two children in the Wantagh schools. "I hope we can bring awareness to this issue."
DeMaio said she hopes the Wantagh Mommas and Massapequa Moms Facebook groups can work closely with The Bully Project on education initiatives. She has purchased a DVD and toolkit from the organization and is hopeful that it will be distributed to parents and children throughout the area.
"My belief is we all need to come together to protect our children, to educate others on what is bullying and how to stand together," she said. "Everybody has to be educated about bullying."
