Breaking news: The East Hampton Union Free School District has decided to disband its varsity football team, the Bonackers, for the coming school year. The JV program and middle school program will not be affected, according to East Hampton athletic director Joe Vas.

The decision was made after East Hampton was asked to move from Conference iV, for smaller schools, to Conference III, a larger division, based on enrollment, Vas said.

And, with only 20 students signed up for both varsity and junior varsity next year, Vas said, after discussing the issue with the board of education, players, parents and school officials, the decision was made to disband the varsity team for next year, with the hope to be back the following year, Vas said.
The decision was made for the safety of the kids, one school official said.

10:25 a.m.: The community is still shocked to learn about the death of a restaurant manager from carbon monoxide poisoning over the weekend at Legal Sea Foods in Huntington. What do you think needs to be done to ensure such tragedies never happen again?

10:27 a.m.: Hundreds are gathering in Southold Monday morning to pay final respects to firefigher Frank Locrotondo, who died last week.

How old is the EH program and is this the first time they have never fielded a varsity team? And just out of curiosity how much money could the district save if they cancelled all the programs?

It is so unfortunate to lose our beloved hometown football team! Much of this has to do with the changing demographic in our town, instead of American football, soccer is their preferred sport. This is going to be an entirely different town in another 10 years, it makes me wonder if English will even be the primary language spoken!

Truly a sad day at EHHS! It's OK wait for the Middle School kids to come along; this MUST NEVER happen AGAIN!

Pretty soon when they say "Football" they'll mean "Soccer" in Nueva Hampton.

I don't have any familiarity with the East End (our Bayside-Douglaston [Queens] Patch has been relegated to a "regional" edition) but could the reason that participation in high school football has diminished be due to the concussions and other football injuries becoming so rampant in the college and professional levels that parents are discouraging their children from associating with the sport on an organized level?

Phil IF you believe that " ...participation in high school football has diminished be due to the concussions and other football injuries becoming so rampant in the college and professional levels..." YOU WOULD BELIEVE ANYTHING, THAT'S 'SHOVELED' TO YOU, AND CALLED "NEWS" ! IT'S ALL ABOUT CONTROL.

@bc: Nothing has been shoveled to me, I was just reflecting on the above posters comments questioning why so few turned out for the football team. I have no conviction on my premise as to why there was a poor turnout, just a thought.

Good, about time! No suprise that kids are being injured playing violent sports. Blame the parents, particularly the fathers, who encourage this macho nonsense. Want to turn a boy into a man, join the Marines. I hear these windbags even yelling at their daughters playing the most ridiculous of all games, girls field hockey! No wonder our kids aren't getting a good education, they're running around chasing a little ball. Well, dogs do a better job of that....
