The North Country Road Warriors, a local area club for runners and walkers, have been running at events around the North Shore in order to provide mentoring, communication and camaraderie among members while promoting healthy lifestyles.
The not-for-profit social and recreational club has had recent success at local events during its inaugural year. In just three 5K events at the beginning of June, the Road Warriors have captured 22 medals.
The group kicked off the successful month for a good cause. On June 2nd, the Long Island 9-1-1 Veterans (dedicated to assisting veterans on L.I. who are experiencing short-term emergencies) held their annual 5K LIMA Run at MacArthur Airport. Seven of the 18 club runners took home medals in a field of 1,654 finishers. Sheila Isaacs, Jennifer Love, and Frank Capone led the way with 1st place finishes in their respective age brackets.
The Road Warriors then followed that up the next day at the 16th annual Joe Keany Memorial 5K race/walk in Miller Place. l. They were followed closely behind by Dustin DesRoches, Shannon Constantine, Kelly Mullady and Kelly Mandia, all of whom finished 1st in their respective age brackets. Of the 12 Road Warriors participating in the event, nine came away with either 1st or 2nd place medals.
They run Saturdays at 8 a.m. in the Plaza Sports parking lot in Rocky Point and Sundays at 8 a.m. on Miller Avenue in Shoreham. This Saturday, the group will take part in the 33rd Shelter Island Run.
