Thousands of Long Islanders reveled in the almost-historic race at the Belmont Stakes Saturday.
But then they tried to go home.
A mad dash from the racetrack to the train tracks left some waiting for hours to catch a train. The Long Island Rail Road said it transported 33,810 people to Belmont Park on Saturday, "a new record by far."
The situation wasn't much better getting out of the parking lot.
"I may not get out of this parking lot until next year's Belmont," one person tweeted. "Truly astounding, even for NY."
Total Saturday attendance at Belmont Park was 102,199, the third highest in Belmont Stakes history, according to the New York Racing Association.
