Video: Massapequans Deal With Blizzard Clean-up

A look at how local residents are dealt with the biggest snowstorm in recent years

Massapequa roads were passable on Tuesday as the cleanup after the blizzard of 2010 continued.

Plows were still out on the streets getting rid of loose snow and widening areas so traffic could pass through.

"We're in mop-up mode," said Oyster Bay Town spokeswoman Phyliss Barry.

Massapequa Park Mayor James Altadonna said workers were out picking up piles of snow that have accumulated on street corners. "All streets are clear, all parking lots are clear," he said.

Officials said the full cost of the storm in terms of cost and overtime won't be known for several weeks.

The Massapequa Public Library reopened Tuesday as  public functions returned to normal.

Meanwhile, the Long Island Rail Road  resumed limited service on Tuesday  on the Babylon Branch , which serves  Massapequa and Massapequa Park.

The town used 300 pieces of snow-removal equipment during the two days of the blizzard. At least 350 town employees were used during the operation, including drivers, support staff and mechanics. Sanitation trucks were refitted with plows on their front ends to assist with the snow removal.

"The biggest problem was the blowing snow and staying ahead of the wind," Barry said. "Everyone had the same problems. Difficult driving and whiteout conditions.

"It was not a fun night to be out," she said.
