Massapequa Starts School Days

Massapequa to begin first year with new Superintendent.

More than 7,500 students in the Massapequa started a new year with a new Superintendent.

The year kicked off for all students except Kindergarteners. It's also the start of new superintendent Lucille Iconis' first school year as hear of the district.

“I’m very excited about the challenges of maintaining and growing what we have here in Massapequa,” Iconis said. “The number one goal for the coming year is to maintain the caliber of education the district is known for."

Iconis, an educator for 35 years, says that the district faces "grave challenges" fiscally including working under the state property tax cap while they implement he Common Core Learning Standards.

The district will also work on a new evaluation system for educators known as the APPR.

In order to prepare middle students for common core, Berner Middle School will shift operations to make class scheduling more flexible.

The district will also pilot a math support program called  Math 180 designed to boost confidence and conceptual understanding.
