5,000 Massapequa Customers Remain in Dark

Rep. Peter King issues warning to LIPA about "poor customer service."

More than 5,000 Massapequa customers remain without power Monday, one week after Hurricane Sandy wreaked havoc on Long Island and plunged much of the community into darkness.

The Long Island Power Authority claims it is working around the clock on restoration and now has more than 6,200 lineman and tree workers on Long Island. The utility reported early Monday that is has restored nearly 700,000 customers to power and is "on track" to have most customers restored by Wednesday.

At 1 a.m. Monday, there are more than 166,000 customers in Nassau County without power, including 46,000 customers in the Town of Oyster Bay, an estimated 100,000 people without power. Many are now shivering through 40-degree nights without heat.

Those include 2,550 customers in Massapequa, 1,543 in North Massapequa, 549 in Massapequa Park and 490 in East Massapequa.

Syosset's numbers are similar to Plainview's, estimated at 3,000 outsages. But neighboring Bethpage has just over 700 customers without power, LIPA reported.

LIPA can not say specifically why certain communities, including Massapequa, are lagging in the restoration efforts. In general, LIPA claims it must before it can address individual neighborhoods. The process takes time, LIPA says.

Hundreds of outraged readers said LIPA was woefully unprepared for the storm and say they have been mistreated by LIPA customer service people.

"Just spoke to a LIPA crew on Macarthur Drive behind John's Farms," wrote Valerie Kaicher Kovel. "The worker said that they are getting no direction from LIPA."

"LIPA: Shameful response," added Barbara A. Nadel. "...It's cold. Homes are damaged. Stop the grandstanding photo ops and get to work."

Rep. Peter King, R-Seaford, demanded that LIPA "immediately remedy its poor customer service and improve its inadequate sharing of information with residents who are still without power."

"LIPA’s failure to keep customers informed of the latest information on conditions and improvements is simply unacceptable," King said. "County Executive (Edward) Mangano and I have heard so many complaints from many Long Island towns and neighborhoods about the ‘arrogant’ and unhelpful attitude of so many of LIPA employees as well as LIPA’s failure to respond to legitimate inquiries from those without power.”

LIPA says 275,000 total customers are without power, excluding customers in the most severely flooded areas. According to LIPA, tens of thousands of customers are being restored daily.

Where was this picture taken? Not Massapequa! Have not seen one truck. LIPA's communication does not exist. LIPA is run by the state, Lets see Cuomo fire all of the management.

I am not one complain but now I've had enough!!! My son goes to Massapequa schools, all of which have school tomorrow except his and one other! I am not upset with MSD but LIPA... This is unacceptable! Residential streets are not a priority...even mine, when schools have had a hanging telephone pole for a week that has been untouched!!! Their handling of this is a complete disgrace at this point!

There is definitely a story here about what is going on in Massapequa south of Merrick Rd. Power was restored for 16 hrs from Thurs night - Fri afternoon. It was then cut off and no information has been provided. We are now hearing that inspections may be required of our homes. Our block did not flood has been calling and just got 3 different stories within 5 minutes: 1) No inspection needed but power will def not be restored by Wed. 2) Same but power may be restored tonight 3) All homes in flooded areas (even non-flooded homes) will need to be inspected as mandated by town.

LIPA now advising that residents south of Merrick Road in Massapequa Park contact Town of Oyster Bay. The LIPA representative noted that they are working with the town and will only restore power to homes that Oyster Bay has inspected, whether the home flooded or not. She also noted that the Town of Oyster Bay should have advised the residents of this. I waited on hold for 95 minutes with LIPA to get that response.

I live in East Massapequa in a flood zone but my house did not get any water in it so I was not aware that I needed an inspection. I called and e-mailed LIPA several times with no luck. I finally got a live person at LIPA on Tuesday night and was told my house needed an inspection it is a new process they are starting. Well needless to say on Wednesday I started the process of trying to find out more information and I was given the run around. I called the town who gave me an 888 number who then told me to call LIPA to tell them I wanted to sign a waiver stating my house didn't have any water in it but I didn't get through to LIPA at all all day. I then called Assembly man John Saladino who gave me all of the information he said he had. He said he has no idea when the inspectors are going to be in the area but you do have to be at home when they come or you will be at their mercy for another appointment. How are we supposed to just stay home all day & just hope that the inspector comes when people have to work? We need more information from both LIPA and the Town. I think it's all a ploy because LIPA can't handle this situation & they figure if they come up with new ways to stall us it's better for them. Clocks Blvd was mostly under water during the storm well only 5 houses on that block don't have power but the rest of the block does, how come they can have it if they were under water?

when you say elite do you mean the hard working people who have money? it's a matter of labels. youRead More call them elite..they call themselves hard workers. yes, some inherit money. but most of us work for it.
Michael Taustine June 16, 2013 at 09:01 pm
No, it has nothing to do with how hard you work. It's just that the elite one percenters are treatedRead More differently when they run afoul of the laws in this country. No one has been jailed for the corporate malfeasance that resulted in the financial crash of '08, in spite of the rules that were ignored or broken. Too big to fail is the order of the day. Meanwhile, petty frauds committed by poor and middle class are prosecuted to the full extent of the law. Two Americas. The rule of law, unevenly applied, whether by race, or class, or economic station will result in the unraveling of society. We may well be seeing the beginnings of that now, as we've entered a new gilded age, where new robber barons are allowed to run roughshod over the lower classes. The very ideals of America are at stake, and we are letting them slide away.

Will the new Massapequa station platform be covered end-to-end as it is now? If it will only beRead More partially covered, like Seaford station, there are going to be a lot of cold, wet, unhappy commuters.
Patrick O'Hara June 12, 2013 at 04:14 pm
Mr. Coyote, The design plans only call for a canopy over certain parts of the station platform, likeRead More almost all of the other stations along the branch. The canopies will be primarily over the staircases, elevator, waiting room, and one other small section on the middle section of the platform between the elevator and east escalator.
