In a tough economy, local businesses are doing what they have to do to survive. 

As always, we posted some jobs available locally. Here's a look at some of the top business stories from the past week:

LI's First Two-Story Panera Bread Coming to Bellmore

Long Island's first two-story Panera Bread is set to open on Merrick Road in Bellmore before the end of the year. Construction is already well underway at 2375 Merrick Rd., and officials told Patch they're targeting Dec. 16 to open, but that's not certain. They'll definitely open the doors by year's end. Click here for more.

Coming Soon in Levittown: New Drive-Through Starbucks

The vacant Rayco4 building was recently knocked down and will soon be replaced by a brand new drive-through Starbucks. A special exception to demolish the vacant building on Hempstead Turnpike and build the new location was approved by the Town of Hempstead Board of Zoning Appeals in July. Click here for more.

East Meadow Walmart to Beef Up Security After Stabbing Incident

After a woman was robbed of her pocketbook and stabbed while loading bags into her car Tuesday night, an assistant manager of the East Meadow Walmart told Patch the company has plans to increase security and possibly add more lighting in the parking lot. Click here for more.

Weinman's Hardware to Close After 91 Years in Bellmore

Just a few months after its 91st anniversary, Weinman's Hardware will close. Owner Roy Weinman said that he does not have an exact close date, but said that the business will shutter before the year ends. Click here for more. 

Nina's Deli Moving into Dr. Munchies Location

Nina's Deli is moving its business just a few blocks down Newbridge Road in the space formerly occupied by Dr. Munchies. Jay and Ivy Minsky opened Dr. Munchies in May. Health concerns forced the Minskys to close the eatery in mid-October, just weeks after a ribbon cutting ceremony. Click here for more.

Kannoli Kings: Rolling Royalty of Desserts

The idea was sparked only last summer. Sal LoPiccolo and his partners, Joe Pinola, Steve Gagliardi and Brian Corso said big events need the best desserts. They decided to buy a truck and make fresh cannoli and other desserts and travel to summer festivals and street fairs. Click here for more.

New Dessert Shop to Open in Merrick

A new business is opening in Merrick and it is going to cater to the dessert lovers. Dessert City Cafe is set to open at 1848 Merrick Road. Xavier Osorio, an employee at the next door Allstate, said the property that once housed a dry cleaning store, was vacant for about a year. Click here for more.
