Massapequa BP Reaches Settlement For Price Gouging

AG also announces judgment against Farmingdale station.

A gas station in Massapequa has reached a settlement with the state attorney general's office  for price gouging in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy.

According to the Attorney General, the station, located at 900 North Broadway in Massapequa, increased profits by 51 percent in the days  immediately following Sandy. The difference between the wholesale price and retail price of gas was $0.78 per gallon before the storm and $1.18 after the storm.

The agreement with the BP gas station requires the station to pay the state $4,500.

The station had claimed the price hike was caused by the owner's inability to reach the company and get a set price, due to power outages after the storm.

Meanwhile, Attorney General Eric Schneiderman's office also obtained a a default judgment of $23,733  against Mena Inter, Inc., which owns the USA Petroleum station at 630 Main Street in Farmingdale.

The state said the station charged 76 cents more per gallon after the storm than it dod before the storm. That's a 73 percent increase.
