Massapequa Scoop: DQ Coming

Restaurant chain famous for its ice cream treats plans to open first Long Island location on Sunrise Highway.

RiDQulous news, ice cream fans.

Dairy Queen has announced plans to open a restaurant in Massapequa.

The Minnesota-based company’s website has a DQ Grill and Chill restaurant coming soon at 5366 Sunrise Highway in Massapequa, near the Westfield Mall.

DQ spokesman Dean A. Peters said the location is expected to open in early May.

No word on who the franchisee is.

Dairy Queen has more than 4,500 locations nationwide, but this would be the first on Long Island.

While DQ is famous for its ice cream, shakes and Blizzard frozen treats, the chain also serves burgers, hot dogs, sandwiches and chicken. That puts it in direct competition with some entrenched Massapequa businesses, from Friendly's to All-American Hamburger.

Peters said DQ also plans to open locations in Manhattan and Staten Island in 2013.

What building will it be in? Is that the old Quiznos? Wish they would put something on the building where the old Wiz was...good luck to them ..we need more businesses to create jobs! As far as competition for All American ...probably not. Krischs ..well I hope so ...they are awful with awful service and dirty...they survive because they have been there so long ..they are terrible! Good luck to DQ

So we looked into the Massapequa Varsity Grill on Merrick Road and here's what we found: http://patch.com/A-1bnK

Peanut Buster Parfaits rule, last DQ was on Rte 111 years ago, people were too stuck on Carvel to give enough business. I wanted to open one on Merrick Rd at the old Carvel Ice Cream and Cake Store, near Berner. Couldn't get the franchise down though :( Good luck to the new owners !! They should do great!

I love Dairy Queen, and I just wrote to the DQ Franchise last week urging for them to come to Long Island. My Dream has come true. DQ Pecan Mudslides and Peanut Buster Parfaits beat Carvel, Friendly's and Baskin Robbins anyday.

I remember as a young kid stopping at a dairy queen after the beach in those summer days somewhere near the port Jefferson area. But eventually it closed down. I am so happy a new one is opening in the area and I can enjoy those delicious ice cream cones dipped in chocolate and not have to wait to go on vacation to enjoy them. Wooooo! Way to go dairy queen. Can't wait till it opens

DQ rocks!!! I believe it's made with fat free milk. Now Long Island can compete with NJ, PA, CT, FL, etc, etc, etc.
Warren Teich February 02, 2013 at 05:38 AM
I remember going there many times. I work around the corner from there and I think they closed in 1987. I started working at my job in 86 and went there all the time, I am waiting 26 years for a new Dairy Queen even though its 50 miles from my home. Warren

Keith McGuinness April 08, 2013 at 03:33 AM
YES!!! It's about time!!! A DQ Grill & Chill Coming Soon to Long Island, how great is that? When will it be coming? I drive passed Massapequa to get to work everyday, and knowing that there's a DQ on the way, I will finally have a place to get good food, plus the best ice cream on the planet! Sorry McDonald's Burger King, Wendy's and Taco Bell...

There used to be a Dairy Queen in Plainview, on Old Country Road, a couple of blocks East of S. Oyster Bay Rd. --- But they left about 50-55 years ago! I think they left around or just before 1960. (Boy, I'm dating myself!!) Now there are homes there. It will be great to have DQ on LI.
