Nautilus Diner Makes a Comeback

Popular Massapequa Diner re-opening soon.

One of the area's most popular businesses is re-opening after a three year absence.

The Nautilus Diner is udergoing a renovation and is hoping to open its doors again in time for the holidays, owner Gus Efstathiou told Patch.

Efstathiou shut the Merrick Road business down in 2010 after a 41-year run.  After emigrating from Cypress with his brother, they bought the diner in 1969 and expanded it to its present size in 1983.

But a dispute over his brother's estate, caused Efstathiou to close down and put a fence around the diner.

"We settled," he said as workers filled the soon to be re-opened eatery.

The fence is down and a sign on the  window says "opening soon." Another sign advertised that new employees are being hired.

While Efstathiou, insisted, "we'll open when we're ready," he acknowledged that he was aiming to re-open "for the holidays," saying he hoped to  have it ready for Christmas.

The eatery will have a new look as renovations were being done to the dining area and kitchen.

The owner said that many old favorites will be on the menu and some new items as well.

At the time of the shutdown Efstathiou hinted that the business would return, saying "In business everything is possible," before speculating about a possible sale.

Instead, the landmark business will return with an original owner. Bon appetit.
