Uncle Giuseppe’s Warns of Credit Card Breach

Three of five stores were affected, the supermarket chain said.

Uncle Giuseppe’s Marketplace, a Farmingdale-based chain of supermarkets on Long Island, warned customers Thursday of a data breach that is affecting three of its stores.

A notice on the supermarket’s website revealed that its stores in East Meadow, Port Washington and Smithtown were all affected, while those in Port Jefferson and Massapequa were not.

“Within 18 hours of the breach being brought to our attention and with assistance from the United States Secret Service, we have made necessary security enhancements to prevent any further data breaches,” the company said, in a statement. “We have also taken every necessary measure to ensure that all banking institutions are aware of the situation and are addressing this issue.”

Customers affected by the breach will not be responsible for the unauthorized transactions, according to the notice on the Uncle Giuseppe’s website.

“We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this incident may have caused you,” company officials stated. “In this technological age, it appears that companies of all sizes are being targeted by hackers and criminals, and we encourage everyone to regularly check their bank statements to be sure that they were not affected by this breach.”

Those with questions are asked to call Heather Hyman at 516-420-0126 ext. 111 between 9 a.m.- 5p.m Monday through Friday, or by email at Heatherh@uncleg.com.

Since this article is in the Massapequa Patch, the headline should read, Massapequa store not breached.
