Boat Catches Fire on Hemlock Lane

Sparks from transformer blaze spread to vessel.

A boat parked in the driveway of a home on Hemlock Lane caught fire yesterday afternoon, authorities said.

The blaze outside the outside the house at the intersection of Hemlock and Beacon in Massapequa Park, was put out after a few minutes, but the boat was gutted.

Jeff Matera, who said his girlfriend lives in the home, said it began as a transformer fire that traveled down utility wires about 50 yards down Beacon Drive to Hemlock.

"Some flames came down and then the boat caught fire and a tree was singed," Matera said.

The family wasn't home at the time of the blaze which broke out just before 1 p.m. and nobody was hurt, he said.

"We're lucky neighbors called, that tree was close to the house," Matera said. "It could have been worse."
