Dec.17: Holiday Magic and Crafts Edition

What's happening in and around Massapequa.

TGIF Massapequa!  We've made it to the end of the week and for many people we're a week away from the Christmas holiday. We're seeing holiday spirit all around Massapequa and that's reflected in "Five Things You need to know today."  Each day, we spotlight events and happenings in and around the area that we think you ought to know about. We are asking for your help too. If there's an event announcement you'd like us to feature, please contact us.

Here's what you need to know today:

  • Teen Craft at Library:   hosts a crafts program with Nancy McCormack. The event gets underway at 4 p.m. and requires a $4 registration fee.
  • Holiday Magic Show: The Long Island Mystics, a chapter of the Society of American Magicians will be performing at 7 p.m. at the  The show is for the entire family and admission is one can of food per person.  The donations will go to the  food pantry.
  • Free Firewood: Beginning Friday, you can have chestnuts roasting at an open fire without anyone nipping at your wallet.  is beginning a free firewood program. Starting  3:00 p.m. Friday and between 7:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, you can go to the Town Highway yard, 150 Miller Place, Syosset and pick up a trunk-full of cut, but not split wood.  The program runs to March 2011.
  • Boys Hoops: The Massapequa Boys Varsity Basketball team tries to continue their hot start when they take on arch-rival Farmingdale at beginning at 4 p.m.
  • Girls Hoops: The Girls Varsity takes to the road for their match-up with Farmingdale. Tip-off at the Dalers' gym is also 4 p.m.
