Feb.17: Superman at the Library Edition

Look up in the sky...It's a bird...It's a plane...It's...

Well OK, it's just the sky over Massapequa. But we hope you'll forgive us for invoking Superman. It's Thursday, and we're getting a bit loopy waiting for the week to end. 

But there is in fact a  "Superman" connection on the agenda today, but it involves an issue that's more serious than your typical comic book fare.

Each day, we spotlight events and happenings in and around the area that we think  you ought to know about. We want your help too. If there's an event announcement you'd like us to highlight, please contact us.

Here's what you need to know  today: 

• Waiting For Superman: The will be presenting the Davis Guggenheim documentary "Waiting for Superman," Thursday. The film, which takes a critical look at American public schools, has ignited a debate over education policy. The role of charter schools and issues concerning teachers' unions play a central role in the film. There will be two showings on Thursday at 1:30 p.m. and 7 p.m.
• Unqua PTA: As long as we're on the subject of education, parents have a chance to play a role in their children's future by attending a PTA meeting. will hold a general PTA meeting and family fun night. It starts at 7 p.m.
• McKenna PTA: McKenna Elementary School is also holding a PTA meeting. It gets underway at the senior center at 1 p.m.
• Track and Field: Members of Massapequa High School's varsity boys and girls track teams will be competing in state qualifying meets. The boys will be at Suffolk Community College, while the girls will be at Saint Anthony's High School/
• Infant and Child CPR class: This education center for expectant mothers will hold a class on this vital life saving skill from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at 924 North Broadway.
