Jan. 24: Looking Back and Looking Forward Edition

What's happening in and around Massapequa.

We're sorry to report that it's Monday, and if you're a fan of the New York Jets it's a particularly painful start of the week. In case you went to bed early, Gang Green lost the AFC Championship game 24-19 to the Pittsburgh Steelers.  It's one of the things we'll be highlighting (lowlighting?) as part of Five Things You Need to Know Today.

  • Super Bowl XLV: As we mentioned, the Jets season ended Sunday night in Pittsburgh. The Steelers will now go on to try for their seventh Super Bowl title on Sunday February 6. Their opponents will be no strangers to the big game. The Green Bay Packers were victorious in  the first two Super Bowls back in the 1960s and also won Super  Bowl XXXI in 1997.  The Packers the Chicago Bears 21-14 to take the NFC title Sunday.
  • Village Board Meeting: The Board will take a look back at the holiday season and acknowledge those who took part in the annual  lighting and . The meeting begins at 8 p.m.
  • Is it summer yet? The Town of Oyster Bay is looking forward to summer once again by making applications available for their lifeguard training course Monday. If you're interested, call the Parks Department at 516-797-4131.
  • Fire Meeting: The Massapequa Fire Department will be holding a board meeting at 8 p.m. Monday night at district headquarters, 1 Brooklyn Avenue in Massapequa.
  • Long Island Tea Party: The Long Island Tea Party will be holding a general meeting at the community Center at Marjorie Post Park at 7:30 p.m.  Their guest speaker will be James Coll, a professor of American History at Nassau Community College. He will be discussing the First Amendment and Religious Freedom.
