June 21: Summer Solstice Edition

What's happening in and around Massapequa.

The heat is on in Massapequa today.

It's Tuesday, it's the first day of summer and it's a busy day in and around Massapequa. Good thing it's the longest day of the year.

We have a Town meeting, an unusual craft at the library and we'll tell you how to bond with our nation's 26th president for free.

Each day, we spotlight events and happenings in and around the area that we think  you ought to know about. We want your help too. If there's an event or announcement you'd like us to know about, please contact us.

Here's what you need to know  today:

  • Summer: The summer season will officially arrive at 1:16 p.m. EDT. As we mentioned, it will be the longest day of the year and we can expect about 15 hours of Daylight in the New York metropolitan area. The Summer Solstice occurs when the earth's axis tilts closest to the sun in the northern hemisphere.
  • Town Board: The Town of Oyster Bay meets at 7 p.m.  at town Hall 54 Audrey Avenue in Oyster Bay Tuesday.  Among the things on the agenda is an awards ceremony for kids of distinction and  a resolution approving the July 1 fireworks show in Massapequa Park.
  • Earring Workshop: This adult program at the will teach you how to link beads such as fresh water pearls and semi-precious stones to make earrings. It gets underway at 7 p.m. Pre-registration is required, and theirs an $8 fee.
  • Alzheimer's Support Group:  This group meets on the third Tuesday of the month and is open to all. It starts at 7 p.m. at
  • Teddy Roosevelt: He's the most famous resident the Town of Oyster Bay has ever produced and you can learn more about him for free Tuesday. The National Park Service is offering a fee-free day at TR's home Sagamore from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.  You still need tickets to tour the home and tours are limited to 14 people.
