PHOTOS: Massapequa Celebrates Memorial Day 2012

Residents come out in droves for the annual Memorial Day parade.

Massapequa Park’s annual Memorial Day parade was upon us Monday, and the streets were packed with festive residents paying homage to the sacrifices of our brave men and women in uniform.

The parade involved representatives of the Armed Forces, local schools, civic organizations, the and above all else, patriotic individuals wishing to express gratitude for the freedoms we enjoy today.

Massapequa Park Mayor James Altadonna said that everything our nation is today is owed to those who gave their all to preserve our way of life.

"Memorial Day is a day to remember all the brave men and women that have sacrificed so much so that we can stand here today and participate in this parade," he said. "And for that, we're forever grateful."

The parade started this year on North Broadway and made its way to Park Boulevard by way of Clark Avenue, and many proud American well-wishers turned out to get involved.

Young Annie Bassey sat excitedly on the curb with her father, waving an American flag and cheering on the parade as it made its way by.

“We go here every year, and I wanted to go again," she said. "I love the parade."

"We always come out to support out vets," added Richard, her father. “This is an important annual tradition for my daughter and I.”

B-103 Radio D.J. The Wiseman was on the sidelines to watch his grandchildren, both Massapequa residents, march today.

"My grandson and granddaughter are in the parade with the Canine Companions," he said. "Plus, it's a great day to come out and celebrate America and and remember our fallen heroes...we should all be here today to remember what this great country's all about."

Dianne Del Monte was parked in her lawn chair on the side of Broadway, her flag flowing free in the cool spring morning breeze.

"I'm here to thank our veterans, and support our country," she said. "I'm a Soldier’s Angel, and I have some soldiers that I support, but I’ve never met them in person...so, I like to come to the parade to show support as well.”
