Waiting For the White Stuff

We haven't seen snow like last year, but the area is preparing.

Last year at this time, Massapequa was still digging out from
the more than three feet of snow on the ground from a series of major snowstorms.  But this winter, it is been a completely different story. So far, Massapequa hasn’t had any snow let alone anything like last year’s series of snowstorms.

There is a forecast of some snow over the next few days, including up to four inches on Saturday, according to the National Weather Service.

But it's far from what we saw last year.

But despite the lack of snow this season, the is prepared to handle any major snowstorm.

“Last year this time, we already had over 30 inches of snow on
the ground,” said Bob Macri, superintendent of Public Works. “There are
different things in place—salt, equipment, workforce if needed,” Macri said. “We haven’t done [any snow removal] so far, but we are ready to go at any time. We’re just playing the waiting game.”

Macri said even though the Village has not had to do any snow removal, that doesn’t mean there hasn't been other work to be done. “[The
lack of snow] definitely effects overtime with the men, but we have plenty of things to do to keep busy,” he said. “There are plenty of other things we can attend to—[lack of snow] is not a bad thing in terms of operations. It gives a more time to pay attention to fixing potholes and street lights.”

Despite the lack of snow this late in the season, the sales
for snow removal equipment at in the have improved from last year. Even though snow hasn’t even touched the ground this year, most people are too nervous to wait until the first major storm before having the proper snow removal equipment.

“This year sales are actually better than last year,” said
a manager of the Home and Garden section at Sears. “As weird as it
sounds, people are coming in and buying snow throwers now because they are nervous about a major storm. Last year, we ran out of everything.”

“We are actually above where we were last year
basically because people don’t want to go through what they went through last year. It was crazy.”
