May 17: Don't Forget to Vote Edition

A look at events and happenings around the Massapequas today.

It's a very important Tuesday for all of our residents, particularly the children in the area.

Massapequa will be holding school board elections and voters will go to the polls to choose two members of the Board of Education. They will also decide whether or not to approve the proposed 2011-2012 school budget.

Here's what you need to know  today: 

  • Polling place Info: Polls will be open from 6 a.m. to 9 a.m.  and there will be four polling places.  They are: The main campus of at 4925 Merrick Road, at 210 Spruce Street, at 199 Pittsburgh Avenue and at 330 Massapequa Avenue.
  • School Budget: The $179 million budget has a 1.72 percent spending increase and a 1.64 percent tax hike. In order to offset expenditures the district used almost $6 million in reserve or "rainy day funds."
  • School Board: There are four candidates on the ballot. Current Board president and are the incumbents, while and are the challengers. The top two vote -getters of the four candidates win the two open seats on the board.
  • PTA:  Voting isn't the only way you can be active in the schools on Tuesday. The PTA will be holding a general meeting Tuesday at 9:45 a.m.
  • Town Board Meeting: The Town Board holds a meeting at Town Hall, 54 Audrey Avenue in Oyster Bay beginning at 7 p.m.  There will be a hearing to consider a new local zoning law which would be applied to the Old Harbour Green Community of Massapequa.
