Oct. 28: Sandy Arrives in Massapequa

Sandy: Hurricane Sandy will be blowing into our area with heavy winds and rain on Monday. The national weather service has issued a coastal flood warning. a high wind warning and a flood watch for our area. All of these watches and warnings are in affect through Tuesday.

Evacuation: On Sunday, Nassau County Executive Ed Mangano issued a mandatory evacuation warning for residents  living in a flood or storm surge zones. This area is usually defined as areas south of Merrick Road in the Massapequas.

Schools: Public schools are closed in the Massapequa, Plainedge and Farmingdale School Districts. St. Rose of Lima  School is also closed.

Public Transit: Forget about it. The MTA began shutting down the LIRR along with all bus and subway service at 7 p.m. Sunday. Customers and the media should monitor the mta.info website or call 511 for the most current service information.

Sanitation/S.O.R.T. All trash and recycling collection in the Town of Oyster Bay has been canceled for both Monday and Tuesday.
