Peter Schmitt: A legendary Massapequa political figure will be laid to rest Monday morning. A funeral mass will be held for Nassau County Legislative leader Peter Schmitt at 11 a.m. Schmitt, who has represented the area since the first county legislature died suddenly last week.

Columbus Day: Monday is Columbus Day, a federal and New York State holiday holiday celebrating Christopher Columbus' 1492 arrival in the Americas. Massapequa Schools will be closed as will the public library. Town Hall  in Oyster Bay and Village Hall in Massapequa Park will also be closed.

Sanitation/S.O.R.T.  Despite the holiday, there will be normal sanitation and recycling pickup.

Fire District: The Massapequa Fire District will hold a board meeting at 8 p.m. at district headquarters, located at 1 Brooklyn Avenue. It gets underway at 8 p.m.
