The week began with the first of three Board of Education meetings which took place this week. The district's final budget discussion was on the agenda at their annual Saturday meeting. The discussion centered on some extra state aid received by the district and concerns about how Massapequa will handle costs associated with schools becoming responsible for tax certiorari refunds.

The Board also met Tuesday to approve the Nassau BOCES budget and elect three BOCES board members.

But the most important spending plan vote came on Thursday night, when the Board adopted the 2012-2013 budget. The $183 million spending plan contained a 2.2 percent tax increase, which is under the state tax cap.

When voters go to the polls to approve the school busdget on May 15. They will also vote for two school board seats that are up for election this year. With the retirement of Thomas Caltabiano, there will be at least one new Board member. Five candidates are running in this year's election.

While the only thing certain in this world are death and taxes, the is certainly becoming an area tradition. Dozens marched last Sunday to make their views known.
