Week in Review: Feb. 5 to Feb. 11

A look at the top stories in Massapequa this week.

From the Post Office to the florist shop, it was an eventful week in the Maassapequas.  We learned about a program dropped in Massapequa Park and possible layoffs in the school district.  

Here's a look back:

Officials at the hinted that teachers could be laid off in order to cut a budget deficit currently projected at $4.7 million.  No specific details have been released, but it is expected to be discussed at the Next Board of Education meeting in March. Officials are blaming the state's new two percent tax cap for the budget shortfall.

The Village of Massapequa Park ended a program that has received a lot of attention. They are going to remove the traffic sensors planted in the asphalt on Park Boulevard. The village didn't issue tickets during the three month experiment and data showed that illegally parked cars were only there for a few minutes.

A worker at the Massapequa Park Post Office was accused this week of stealing more than $1,000 from customers and pocketing DVDs from Blockbuster and Netflix, prosecutors said. Harold Gutierrez was charged with grand larceny.

A Massapequa man was charged in a creepy crime in Farmingdale. Carlos Sanchez was accused of inappropriately touching the feet of two underage girls in separate incidents near Farmingdale High School.

Finally, we learnded that working in a florist shop during Valentine's season isn't all flowers and candy. But we wish you the best for Valentine's Day anyway.
