From school cost cuts to precinct mergers, the business of tightening the belt was a dominant theme of this past week. We also saw a daring daylight robbery and a troubling accident near a school.

A controversial plan to merge Nassau County's eight police precincts into four on Monday. The 10-9 vote went along party lines with local legislator Joseph Belesi, R-Farmingdale casting a pivotal vote.
The Massapequa School District is also headed for cost cutting measures and the elimination of jobs. last week, vowing again that programs won't be cut next year. But the extent of possible layoffs won't be known until next week.
Several schools went into lock-down after a at the store on Sunrise Highway. Nobody was hurt when masked robbers held up a clerk at gunpoint.
There was another police incident near a school when a bicyclist who accidentally hit a parked car and fell to the street, who police said left the scene of the accident a block away from Elementary School.
Finally, Massapequa welcomed a new business to the area as opened a new franchise on Sunrise Highway.
