Weigh in on Funding Fight

The fight over social service cuts that could affect Massapequa's YES Community Counseling is going down to the wire. How will it come out?

The clock is ticking towards Thursday and a painful deadline for organizations such as YES Community Counseling.

YES is one of dozens of social service providers that received a letter from County Executive Ed Mangano threatening to cancel  their contracts with the county if Democrats  didn't pass refunds that are due to residents who protested their tax bill.

Three Democrats are needed to create a supermajority to pass the bill and an attempt by Republicans to pass it this week failed to get those votes.

Democrats have argued that Mangano is to blame because the County rescinded a law that funded the service programs with money received from red light cameras.

Caught in middle are the service organizations who are watching time run out.

We want to know if you think there will be a deal.

Take our poll below and weigh in with your comments.

Both sides blame the other. It is the citizens of Nassau County who will suffer. Every legislator should be ashamed for putting party affiliation over the well-being of the people they serve.

Dear Legislator Peter Schmitt,
Please, YOU CAN NOT ELIMINATE THE FUNDING THAT SUPPORTS YES and other YOUTH SERVICES! There has been a proposal put forward that would eliminate the Nassau County Youth Board and other Human Service Departments that fund our programs. Doesn't it seem unbelievable that in spite of our headlines screaming about teen deaths, family violence, unemployment, bullying, suicide and other tragedies that our elected officials could actually propose such a response? Something is terribly wrong when they can consider our children as disposable... when they are our future! Our children and our community deserve nothing less. We cannot allow the elimination of the resources that help those most in need in our community. Nassau County government appears to have chosen a path that will affect services not only to children, youth, and families, but to our senior citizens as well. THIS CAN NOT BE TOLERATED from either political party! Our elected officials must find a way to avoid these cuts to human services and save YES. You, Mr. Schmitt, have been elected to the position to protect our most vulnerable residents. Children and families should not be used for any political issues; their future is far more important than that. Thank you,

Vulnerability, in many cases, is a reflection on the lack of persistence and desire. Too many people are not doing enough personally to fight for themselves, just waiting for society to bail them out. If those people are more resourceful on their own, they will succeed. The political parties have more significant issues on their plate, especially when Nassau County itself is down on it's knees.

Cut all outside law firm contracts and have the work done in-house like it was under Suozzi and the funding will be there. And start cutting patronage positions and appointee salaries.
Kristen Ferrari July 2, 2012 at 01:56 am
Ralph, please tell a child being abused or neglected by their parents to fight for themselves and not to wait for intervention. And please tell the kid I knew who's father is an addict incapable of caring for him that he'll be more successful in life if he just waits it out.
Do you have any idea all of the programs this will impact or are you so sure its people waiting in line for freebies? Considering that it is the political parties mucking up these programs by playing games with funding, I would say that the funding issue is significant enough that they should be worried about it. Go back to explaining to kids that vulnerability is a reflection on them. That may be the most ridiculous thing I've heard so far.

If a child is being abused or neglected by the parents lock them up or take the child away from the neglectful parents.we are not custodians of all the neglected people in Nassau county. Make sure your children are safe and sound. That is YOUR duty.
Kristen Ferrari July 3, 2012 at 12:35 am
Ken, I would say you don't know anyone who has dealt with abuse, CPS, or the legal system when it comes to neglected kids and I'm happy for you that you've been lucky enough to avoid it. I could share stories of kids I've seen abused and neglected, some whom I've taken into my home to live because they have been failed by the system. You'd be surprised how hard it is to have a child removed and how adamantly judges are when it comes to protecting parental rights, even of an abusive parent.
I wish it were as easy as you make it sound. Maybe then we wouldn't need those programs that are in danger of being cut. In the meantime, not only do we need them but the red light funds were originally supposed to go towards those funds. The money is there. The legislature is playing games. I wonder what you think will happen in your neighborhood to all of those kids we will fail because you think it is not your duty.

when you say elite do you mean the hard working people who have money? it's a matter of labels. youRead More call them elite..they call themselves hard workers. yes, some inherit money. but most of us work for it.
Michael Taustine June 16, 2013 at 09:01 pm
No, it has nothing to do with how hard you work. It's just that the elite one percenters are treatedRead More differently when they run afoul of the laws in this country. No one has been jailed for the corporate malfeasance that resulted in the financial crash of '08, in spite of the rules that were ignored or broken. Too big to fail is the order of the day. Meanwhile, petty frauds committed by poor and middle class are prosecuted to the full extent of the law. Two Americas. The rule of law, unevenly applied, whether by race, or class, or economic station will result in the unraveling of society. We may well be seeing the beginnings of that now, as we've entered a new gilded age, where new robber barons are allowed to run roughshod over the lower classes. The very ideals of America are at stake, and we are letting them slide away.

Will the new Massapequa station platform be covered end-to-end as it is now? If it will only beRead More partially covered, like Seaford station, there are going to be a lot of cold, wet, unhappy commuters.
Patrick O'Hara June 12, 2013 at 04:14 pm
Mr. Coyote, The design plans only call for a canopy over certain parts of the station platform, likeRead More almost all of the other stations along the branch. The canopies will be primarily over the staircases, elevator, waiting room, and one other small section on the middle section of the platform between the elevator and east escalator.
