Monday is Labor Day, a Federal Holiday devoted to honoring the contributions of American workers.
It was first celebrated in New York City in 1882 and Oregon was the first to make it a state holiday in 1887, according to the US Labor Department website.
It became a federal holiday, celebrated on the first Monday in September in 1894.
