Help Massapequa Resident Battle Alzheimer's

Help area residents in need through GoFundMe.

A Massapequa man whose grandmother lost her battle with Alzhemer's last year is asking for help fighting the disease.

Joseph Moirano started the campaign to raise $2,000. As of Thursday afternoon it's raised $610.

The page reads:

I remember just a few years ago, Grandma Joanie would often be at our house, helping with chores and making her famous apple pie. When she returned to her house in Yonkers, my grandma was always attending church or volunteering at the local hospital. She made it her priority to live a fulfilling life. It saddens me to think how only months later this all changed. My once active grandmother unfortunately became incapacitated, all because of one horrible disease. In March of 2012, Grandma Joanie was diagnosed with dementia, a form of Alzheimer's.This terrible disease is a result of a loss of brain function, which affects memory, judgement, thinking and behavior. For the past 17 months she has been fighting, doing everything possible to keep in touch with the people she loved. Grievously, on August 21st, she lost her battle to dementia. However, she will never be forgotten. Grandma Joanie did so much for her family and friends, and now it's our time to give back and help stop this terrible disease that so sadly ended her life.
