Massapequa Resident Celebrates 100th Birthday This Weekend

Massapequa resident Marcella Miller celebrates a century of memories this weekend.

Miller, who's lived in the area for nearly 60 years and is a longtime parishioner at St. William the Abbot in Seaford turns 100 on Sunday.

Miller told relatives she "feels great" and "is blessed to be surrounded by family and friends," as she reaches the milestone.

Born in Newfoundland in 1914. She emigrated to Manhattan in 1944. Miller and her husband Peter to Massapequa in 1955. He was a custodian at Schwarting Elementary school, while she worked as a seamstress for many years.

The couple had three children, Roslyn, Amadio, Dorothy Dutton and Charlie Miller. Roslyn, who was a member of Massapequa High School's first graduating class still lives n Massapequa, where she's worked for the Water District for 35 years.  Millers sister Rose Santoro, a mere youngster at age 95,

The other two children attended St. William the Abbot school. The parish has meant a lot to Miller through the years and dozens of friends, relatives and parishioners braved Tuesday's snow to take part in a birthday celebration for her at the church.


Miller is still a volunteer at St. William of Abbot and has been counting their weekly donation envelopes for about 30 years. She also regularly attends bible study and is a very active member of the church knitting club, which knits shawls for the poor and elderly.
