The K Dolls

Kim, Khloe, Kourt, and Kristen……I like the sound of that. Ah, to be one of the K’s. There’s a lot of love for the Kardashian family and, it seems, a lot of hate. I’m not sure I understand it. Just for clarification though, I’m in the love section.

Years ago the only Kardashian we knew was Robert. He became famous for being best friends with OJ and I hated him. I held him just as responsible for OJ being acquitted as I did the jurors who later celebrated with him.

When Kim’s sex tape came out I was ready to chalk it up as proof that the rich and famous raise spoiled kids with no values. Then I watched with interest as the family circled its wagons around her. Not just that, they took the lemons and made multi-million dollar lemonade.

Most of us have had our share of relationship mistakes and while a sex tape may not be one of them, do any of us really want our dirty laundry being aired by an ex? In fairness to her, an ex took the tape and sold it hoping to propel himself to fame, not the other way around.

So what’s with the hate? I know that if someone knocked on my door and offered me millions of dollars to follow me around, I would knock my kids over getting to the junk drawer in search of a pen so I could sign on the dotted line. Millions of dollars are millions of dollars. I don’t know anyone who wouldn’t love a few million including me.

I don’t tune in and wonder if by watching I’m sending a message to my daughter that making a sex tape is ok. I don’t tune in thinking that by watching the show my daughter will date half of the NFL either. I am trying this thing where I try to teach my daughter that she’s responsible for her own behavior and choices and that what she does is not the fault of any given celebrity.

Do I watch the show in hopes of becoming just like one of the K’s? Well, sometimes I do but usually I just enjoy turning off my brain for a half hour and immersing myself in a lifestyle that seems unreal to me. It was also a pleasant surprise to see that despite the wealth, they seem like a pretty normal family. They fight. They make up. They love each other despite any flaws or mistakes made. They just also happen to be rich and famous and that is thanks to an American public, who love them or hate them, cannot seem to get enough of anything Kardashian.

I’ll take the Kardashians over Lindsey Lohan or Paris Hilton any day of the week. I can’t remember the last time I watched the news and wondered if this would be the time that any of the K’s would go to jail for violating their parole for the umpteenth time. I also can’t remember any of the K’s promising to cure cancer or end world hunger. They only promised to be exactly who they are which is three women who found a light shining on them and were smart enough to charge an admission fee.

Of course I also wonder why  people get upset at the Kardashian’s fame and yet nothing was made of the fact that the Charlie Sheen Roast on Comedy Central drew over 6 million viewers. Comedian after comedian joked about Sheen’s history of violence towards women he supposedly loved and even the ones he didn’t love. But please, let’s hate on the Kardashians.
