HOW DO I STAY AT HOME AND AGE IN PLACE?

(The Kornreich Technology Center at the Viscardi Center was kind enough to send me this short article about “Aging in Place.”  It was sent in connection with a presentation that they will be giving at the library.

The presentation on "Aging in Place" will be taking place at 1 pm on Tuesday, October 1st in the Massapequa Bar Harbour Library Building Auditorium.  All are welcome to attend!)

“Most of us want to age in place so we can stay in a familiar place and maintain a strong connection with family, friends and a lifetime of memories. As we age, we may become ill or develop a disability which could make our current home undesirable as it would no longer be able to support us effectively.

Sometimes, it might make good economic sense to move or downsize.

Here are just some questions that will be addressed during the presentation at the Bar Harbour Library on October 1st at 1PM by a neighbor from Old Harbour Green, Cindy Roth Managing Consultant at the Kornreich Technology Center at the Viscardi Center.

  • Are you able to maintain the home both physically and financially?

  • Are yard work and home maintenance chores manageable?

  • If you are not able to take those chores on yourself, will you be able to afford the help you will need?

  • Will your home support you if you have a disability or are limited in your basic tasks of daily living?

  • Are the hallways and doorways wide enough to allow a wheelchair?

  • Is there easy access in and out of the home or can a ramp be installed?

  • Would it be easy to install safety equipment such as handrails, grab bars and other devices as needed?

  • Attend this first of three sessions offered by Kornreich.”

The next two sessions in the series will be:

    • Safety in the Home and Outdoors - at 1 pm on October 15th, and

    • Aging and Wellness - at 1 pm on October 16th.

They will also be held in the Auditorium of our Massapequa Bar Harbour Library, and all are welcome!
