Shortening the Cross

Shortening the Cross

Is it a mystery, or is the Divine beckoning when information enters our consciousness, and we know exactly what we are supposed to do with it? While at Mass today, my favorite Deacon was called forth by God to deliver a homily. As he spoke words of wisdom and compassion, my mind was lead to a cartoon that was passed around the internet years ago. The character was depicted with a Cross by which he loudly complained how difficult it was to carry, especially through the toils and labors of daily activities. Then, the man had a great idea, and each day he sawed off a little of the Cross’ length to lighten the burden. After a few days, it became easier to carry the load, and the man was gliding along. Life was a piece of cake as he whizzed past others who were struggling, sweating, and suffering. Everything looked good with his newly acquired pampered lifestyle. Then, one day there was a huge gaping hole in the land that made it impossible to traverse, and everyone needed to get from one side to the other. One by one, the people laid their Cross from one ledge to the other, and walked across. When it was the man’s turn, he realized he had a severe problem. His Cross was too short, and could not bridge the gap. He could not get across.

There are no short cuts, no excuses, and no simple solutions. Life is a journey that is meant to be experienced, fulfilled, and assimilated …and it just may be difficult too. When the winds blow, we can run for cover, or we can allow ourselves to get a little tousled. It may be a ‘bother,’ but Jesus accomplished it for us. He completed the hard part knowing fully that His destination would not be joyful for Him, but yours could be. Carry your Cross proudly, lift it high when you can, and always remember our Lord has already done what was asked of Him. Have you? In a world filled with diseases, struggling relationships, and global strife, we must be the visible Christ to others. What happened to the cartoon man? Another person placed his Cross down so he could continue onward. Where is your Cross? Dust it off, and carry it... You never know when you will need it.
