We Can't, But They Should

President Obama, in a press conference said--

“The United States is not simply going to involve itself in a military action in the absence of a political plan by the Iraqis that gives us some assurance that they’re prepared to work together,” he said. “We’re not going to allow ourselves to be dragged back into a situation in which while we’re there we’re keeping a lid on things” but the political leaders fail to address the underlying fissures dividing Iraqi society."

Elsewhere he spoke of the Iraqi government's responsibility to make the "hard decisions" necessary to bring about a peaceful resolution to the violence in Iraq.

The United States has no desire for more war. President Obama was elected to get us out of Iraq and Afghanistan. As the entire region collapses, he must resist all advice to resume American involvement in those hopeless regions.

One thing that is hard to overlook, is how Obama correctly assigns responsibility for Iraqi security to the Iraqi government, tasking them with the need to work together to solve it's own problems.  At the same time, the United States Congress has become hopelessly impotent in addressing its own responsibilities for governance.

How can we possibly expect Iraq to accomplish what our Congress has completely forsworn?
