Not Your Grandma’s Calamari

Meet the fried squid that’s worth a trip to Amityville.

Fried calamari is to Massapequans like water is to the rest of America. That is, necessary for survival.

And while everyone has a favorite place to get it (“That place on Hicksville Road!” “Nah, it’s a spot in Brooklyn!” “Nope, it’s my mom’s kitchen!”),

Raimo’s in Amityville—a pizza joint/restaurant located in the strip mall on Merrick Road just past County Line—just might have the ultimate version.

Dubbed “Calamari Contadina Style,” this beautiful medley of tastes and textures is described in the menu as “crispy calamari tossed with sautéed broccoli rabe, cherry peppers, roasted garlic, and olive oil, topped with crumbled Gorgonzola.” In other words, the dish is crunchy, spicy, sweet, and savory…all at once!

Try it once, and you'll never ask a side of watery marinara sauce again.
