How to Choose Paint Colors for Your Kitchen

If you’re stuck trying to choose paint colors for your kitchen, you’re not alone. Deciding what colors to use and finding the perfect shades can be tricky, but with these tips it’s not impossible.

It’s a good idea to make any needed repairs to your kitchen before you start painting. Repair cabinets and flooring and contact a plumber who offers appliance repair, drain cleaning and water heater repair on Long Island to help you get your kitchen in good shape.

Consider the Rest of Your Home

Choose a paint color that is either in the same family as the other colors in your home or that is a contrasting color that will add interest. Doing this will make your kitchen fit in and will create smooth transitions from the kitchen to adjoining rooms.

Assess the Lighting and Size of the Kitchen

If your kitchen doesn’t have a lot of light, go with a lighter color to make it look bright. Smaller kitchens usually don’t do well with darker colors, which make them look even smaller.

But, if you have a very large kitchen, you could pull off a darker color or you could paint just one wall a deep hue to add some contrast and create an accent wall.

Pick up some paint chips from your hardware store, tape them to your wall and look at what the colors look like at different times of the day in different lighting.

Coordinate with Your Cabinets

Your cabinets are probably the most prominent feature in your kitchen, so make sure the paint colors work with the color and style of the cabinets.

Use the Right Finish

Gloss, matte, flat and eggshell finishes aren’t ideal for kitchens because they are harder to clean. Instead, choose a semi gloss or satin paint. When you are done painting, keep a small can of the paint on hand so you can easily do touch ups.

Prepare Your Kitchen

Before you start painting, make repairs to the walls, cupboards and appliances so that you won’t have to worry about damaging your new paint when you make these repairs later. Also be sure that your walls are completely clean before you start painting.

Refinishing your cabinets, adding window treatments, installing new cupboard knobs and drawer pulls and making sure your plumbing is in excellent condition will also make your kitchen feel like new. You can find more tips for painting your kitchen on the Pat Dolan Plumbing website.
