Another Deception Burglary in Massapequa Park

Burglary of 81-year-old man, is one of two incidents Tuesday.

An elderly Massapequa Park man became the second person in the area to have his home burglarized Tuesday after being distracted by one of the burglars, police said.

The 81-year-old victim answered the door of his home on Lindbergh Street at about 12:10 a.m. for a woman who claimed that she had just moved into the neighborhood.

The woman claimed she wanted to put up a fence that would border the victim's property.

While communicating with someone via two-way radio, she convinced the victim to go to the backyard with her.

While there, the elderly man became suspicious and went back inside the home. He saw a man get into a car with the woman who had claimed to have been his neighbor.  The car had out of state license plates.

The woman is described as being Hispanic or possibly a light skinned black, in her twenties, with a medium build. She is approximately 5-feet 8-inches tall, wearing a knit hat, black jacket, blue jeans and black boots.

The man was wearing a suit jacket and got into a gray or blue vehicle. They were last seen headed east on Lindbergh Street.

The victim called police and determined jewelry had been taken.

A short time earlier, there was an incident in Merrick involving an similar plot to lure a resident from their home. Police said they believe two incidents are related.

Cops are also looking into the possibility that this burglary is also related to another one in Massapequa Park earlier this month, in which an 80-year-old man was burglarized after being lured to his backyard by a man claiming to work for the power company.

Police issued a crime alert about these so-called deception burglaries after that burglary and another incident involving two men in Jericho.
