Assault Suspect Crashes in North Massapequa

Cops: Levittown man goes on rampage, beats man with table leg.

A Levittown man went on a violent rampage Thursday, breaking into a Bethpage home and beating a man inside with a wooden table leg, police said.

Hours later, the same suspect allegedly stole a car from Auto World in East Meadow and crashed it on a ramp to the Southern State Parkway in North Massapequa while under the influence of drugs.

Nassau County police said that Albert C. Garfield, 47, crashed his car into the driveway fence of a Bethpage home just after 8 a.m. Thursday, kicked in the door of the home and beat a 50-year-old victim with a table leg he brought with him.

The victim suffered multiple cuts and bruises and was hospitalized for treatment to his head injuries.

Garfield then fled the scene before police arrived. Two hours later, police said Garfield stole a 2007 Kia from a 50-year-old woman waiting to have her car serviced at Auto World, located at 2520 Hempstead Tpke. in East Meadow.

Garfield fled eastbound on Hempstead Turnpike and crashed the car on Hicksville Road at the ramp to the Southern State Parkway, police said

Officers arrived at the scene and determined that Garfield had been driving under the influence of drugs. He was arrested and transported to Nassau University Medical Center, where he was treated and released.

Garfield is being charged with first degree burglary, second degree assault, third degree grand larceny, third degree criminal possession of a weapon and driving while ability impaired by drugs.

He is scheduled to be arraigned on Friday at First District Court in Hempstead.
