Bicyclist Injured in Accident near Unqua School

Police looking for vehicle that left scene.

A Massapequa woman suffered severe head trauma she was struck by a vehicle on Unqua Road Thursday morning, in what police are calling a hit and run accident.

The 45-year-old woman, whose name was not immediately released, was riding south on Unqua in the northbound when she struck the mirror of a parked vehicle near Morris Lane.

She fell off the bike and landed on the road when she was hit by a car traveling north that did not remain at the scene, police said.

The car that fled was described as a older model teal colored Ford Taurus.  The woman was taken to an area hospital where she was treated for her head injuries.

The accident took place about a block south of the at 11:35 a.m.

Parents received emails saying that Unqua road was closed until about 2:25 p.m. and dismissal was not affected by the accident.

The letter said, "virtually all of the children in the school were unaware of what had occurred outside."

Umm .. 2010-2012 is the exact definition of "late model". Instead of complaining about newsday using words you don't understand, perhaps you could repeat for patch readers the exact description - as it's not included in the patch article. "Late-model teal-colored Ford Taurus." Or maybe even expand on it? Glad to hear Ellen is in stable condition this morning and hope she makes it through.

Jeff I'm not complaining just stating don't believe everything you read. The car they show is not the correct color but is in fact the right type car. It all happened so fast! our focus was to block her from getting further injured & getting her help fast. I to hold her family in my prayers. I can't get her out of my mind. I hope her children get there mom back.

I'm not sure if everyone knows, Ellen passed away on Saturday. What an incredibly sad and tragic event. My thoughts and prayers go out to the family and friends, especially her 3 young children.
