Breitkopf Honored in Massapequa Park

Plaque honors officer killed in the line of duty in 2011.

A plaque has been placed in Massapequa Park in honor of a Naassau County police officer  who was killed in the line of duty in 2011.

The bronze memorial to officer Geoffrey Breitkopf was placed at the corner of Clark Boulevard and Front Street on Saturday by the Nassau County PBA.

Breitkopf was killed in March 2011 while responding to the scene of Anthony DiGeronimo, a Massapequa Park man who had charged at officers with knives, police have said.

He was shot by an off-duty officer at the scene in a case of mistaken identity, according to a report on the incident.

Breitkopf, who served with the Nassau County Police Bureau of Special Operations was remembered as "a good friend, father, husband" and one of a kind," according to PBA president Jim Carver.

Among those in attendance at the ceremony were Rep. Peter King, R-Seaford, Assemb. Joseph Saladino, R-Massapequa, County Legis. Michael Venditto, R-Massapequa and Massapequa Park mayor Jeffrey Pravato.
