Cops: Man Resists Arrest, Assaults Officer at Sunrise Mall

A man faces assault charges after Nassau County Police said he injured an officer while under arrest.

Jose Rodriguez, 28, of Central Islip, was detained at the Sunrise Mall Wal-Mart Sunday for petit larceny, cops said. Two Seventh Squad detectives arrived on an unrelated investigation and told Rodriguez he was being charged. When his wife and two young children arrived and were told to leave, Rodriguez attempted to leave, police stated. Detectives told the defendant to remain seated but Rodriguez refused and a struggle ensued, cops said. Detectives tried to handcuff Rodriguez but he struggled and injured one of the detective's hands.

The incident happened Sunday at 3 p.m., police said.
